I listened very closely to one of my favourite albums - Sinatra’s songs for swinging lovers. I’d never taken notice of the bass, even to the point of knowing it was there but not really taking any notice.

Today I did.

What Ana amazing player. Tone, pocket, groove, harmony, skill.

Joe comfort. What a bassist.

Charles Mingus, in his autobiography Beneath the Underdog, wrote that when he was a child in the Watts section of Los Angeles, Joe Comfort taught him how to play double bass. Joe's wife, Mattie, was the inspiration for Duke Ellington's "Satin Doll".

Some of those studio cats could really play. Of course everyone knows about Duvivier and Hinton, but here's one I bet most of you don't know: Bob Daugherty. Every time I go to Yankees Stadium and they play Sinatra's NY, NY I check him out. Check out his Fender bass line on the Barney Miller theme. Richard Davis used to call him to sub on the Thad and Mel gig, and he sounded great in that hard core context.
