The ISB just posted an obit for Joe Guastafeste of the Chicago Symphony. I never met him but did experience his creation Basshenge in northern Mn. I was on a tour with a jazz trio in 2004 or thereabouts and we were traveling in a van between dates that took us on the highway along the Canadian border right past the site. I knew it was there and there was a small sign as I recall and I talked my vanmates into a brief stop. I should mention the temperature was below zero F. and the wind was blowing snow sideways. I was determined and the guys waited while I tramped over and looked. There wasn't a whole lot to see at that point but to me it was worth it even though snow covered everything except the shapes. I don't know that I'll ever get there again but it was worth it knowing something so unique and great exists. RIP Mr. G.
