I assume he is playing in 5ths tuning. It looks like it makes the difficult double stops near the end of the Sarabande not quite as demanding. Also it seems like it allows him to play it in a more resonant, open, lower, register. (Obviously his playing is as good as it gets)

Wow, that really works in G. Is that a common key for the bass version? And his phrasing choices at times are very interesting. A beautiful version that suits the bass so nicely.

Yes, but in standard tuning you can't resolve the Prelude to the open G.
