In addition to Mr. Goldsby's other and many contributions to jazz bass pedagogy I would like to thank him for his work with the WDR big band. When a student in the high school or college jazz ensemble is playing a tune or arrangement recorded on video by the WDR band, all I have to do is tell them to check it out. I will call attention to Mr. Goldsby and, after a few suggestions of what to watch and listen for, I tell the student, "Just play like that". I makes my job much easier.:) Seriously, that band and Mr. Goldsby's playing are truly inspirational.

Thanks for mentioning the WDR big band play along app. I’ve watched many of their videos on YouTube and this band and Mr. Goldsby always sound incredible. Unfortunately, the app is not available in the App Store in my country (Denmark). Bummer..must be some legal reasons

Thanks for the kind words! The WDR Big Band play along app is (for the time being) only available in Germany, due to licensing issues. But ... if you make the leap, use a VPN set to Germany, then switch to the German App Store (just for this one download—you can switch back after you're finished), you can get it. The app comes with two tunes already loaded. There are 15 tunes in total, so you might want to download a couple of the other charts and audio when you are using the VPN. The files are generally about 600-700mb because of all the audio tracks that are downloaded at once. You get the Pdf of the chart, and there's a mixer to take the bass out or solo certain instruments. There are beginner charts and advanced charts. It's free if you're in the German apple app or google play store ;)

Aside from the fact that I'm pretty helpless beyond basic computer operation, I like to have the students watch the videos so they can see body language, technique, and the whole vibe of players who are so good. Mr. Goldsby's approach and relaxed relationship with the bass not to mention great playing are lessons in themselves.
