Bass sounds good - but I think it's the player you are 'hearing'. I had one like it ('86 4003 w/the 2 part pg) and it is a great sounding bass for sure... in the right hands.

I had the single pickup Ric 4000, and I slapped it silly for about seven years. It was truly a great bass.
The band is tight and this dude is killin it on the ric..nice change of pace from a P or a J that you'd "typically" see in this type of music arrangment
Johnny Lee Long's videos always put a big smile on my face. 
Sounds great! I love my Ric, it's a lot more versatile than people give it credit
He’s a funny dude and a great player, hard not to grin watching him kiss his Ric! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Ric in a Jazz band, but it sounds great, go figure.

FYI: His Ric is no longer stock... he's added an active preamp, which is being used in this vid.

Ric get nice slap tone stock that is close to a Jazz. This is me slapping a Ric back in May or June:

No doubt! I've got a 4003SW myself, and love the slap tone, too.
Just wanted to add the info about the preamp, so folks wouldn't think that Johnny Lee Long's tone was from a stock Ric.
Do you know Johnny Doc? He’s a friend of mine. Local cat. Never knew he was a YouTube sensation until recently. He’s a character but nothing like he is when the camera goes on. Great dude and a great player.

I don't know him, though he seems like a really cool, upbeat guy, based on the YouTube vids. Saw the one where he details the preamp install, and recognized the 5th knob (which replaced the pickup selector) in the video in this page.
No, I do not him personally, but it is nice to know that both you and Brad know him in the real world.
Dr. Cheese and that passive Rick also sound fantastic! Glad you opened my
eyes to Ricks a few months ago. You were the one who informed me that Leon Sylvers' great basslines on the early Shalamar songs were played on a Rick.
Dr. Cheese, you have an incredible slap tone. Like Larry Graham and Louis Johnson, you slap basses and produce a thunderous tone!
