Just "finished" mixing a track (hard rock) - critique welcome

Hey all,

Been a long time since I've posted here on talkbass, but I really need your feedback on something
Last year the Band and I went into a recording studio and recorded a couple of songs - We were stoked with the result but the price was high. We talked about it and we decided we might come up with something similar if we recorded at our rehearsal space.

This track - Enslaved (original) is recorded at our "studio" at our rehearsal space. I then took home the tracks and mixed it here at home. We are all satisfied with the result - but I think I need some unpartial ears on it. I would love some feedback from you guys - both on recording/mixing, and of course the song itself.

Let me know what you think.

The guitars are a little hot in the mix, and the vocal is a little buried. Overall, the sound quality is good, on my computer speakers, anyway. Impressive for a home recording.

Yes, too high in the mix. Lowering the volume of the guitars may fix the vocal level by itself. It's hard to tell if the guitars are burying the vocal, or if the vocal is just too low.

For my taste it's a great starting point, but I think the drums need more beef. Not sure how else to desribe it. Not quite 80's big drum sound, but just some more girth. I agree with the guitar/vocal mix someone posted earlier. I also believe it was Sting who said you never finish a song, you just abandon it........ Good luck and have fun. It sounds pretty good as is, so you are close.

Don't necessarily agree that the vocals are a little low in the mix as they seem to sound OK through my laptop but the drum sound more than anything needs working on to get a heavier sound to the drums or beef or girth.

Overall pretty good song. Was there some echo on the vocals?

Band mix: Good Overall
Had I mixed it, I probably would of turned down the guitar.... Just a smidge. I also would have brought out a bit more bass to accompany the kick drum.

Vocals: I liked it and disliked it at the same time.
I like his tone and power in his singing. However, the style and accenting was a bit strong. Had a very difficult time making out what he was singing, except when the band choked the riffs...example, "makes me want to scream". The effect could be backed off a hair too.
Overall good jam!

I agree that the guitars levels could come down, just a notch.

I would also agree with some of the others that there is a touch too much reverb on the vocals. Maybe just going to a "Smaller room" reverb with faster decay would do the trick.

Other than that, I think that was a great performance and an impressive mixing job!

Yeah, guitars are a bit loud which buries the vocals. The drums could come up a touch overall and the kick needs at least a little more EQ boosting around 100 and 3k give or take. It may be out of phase with the other drum mics, so check that first. Overall its a really solid mix!

I agree with the following:

  1. Guitars too high in mix
  2. More bottom end on drums/maybe slightly higher in mix (can't tell - once guitars come down we have a new mix anyway)
  3. Vocal slightly buried
This is not at all my style of music, but I have to say, it sounds pretty great! I think that vocalist is pretty good. And yes, the bass playing is quite good as well.
