This guy is far better than me, and he confirms what I thought. Playing finger style, flats and rounds sound nearly the same on fretless. Rounds, however, do sound far better slapped on fretless than flats.
Some YouTube videos are useful if you want to hear what the recorded direct sound will be but for live playing situations it is really, really hard to get an accurate video.
There is no substitute for hands-on, real-world experience.
I find on my fretless rounds sound brighter and more mwah than flats. Quite a difference, really.
i dis flats (for fun ) but i really don't think it's so much a rounds vs. flats issue on fretless as it is player technique/style + the instrument itself + settings.
with the right EQ/reverb/technique = i'm not surprised that string choice is irrelevant.

Yep. Not all flats are the same either, by any means. The Cobalt Flats I have on one fretless are pretty much just as bright as DR Sunbeams were on my other one.
Thanks for the video! Not much difference .. I thought I heard a tiny bit more string noise on the roundwound version (for example, when he shifts position at about 0:40). But I didn't hear as much of a difference between the two as I expected. Very interesting!
I had dead rounds on my Pedulla when I bought it, then I put on Sadowsky Nickel Rounds which were OK. I ordered LaBella flats from Sweetwater, and that is what you hear whenever I post a video of my Pedulla. I ordered a set of Cobalt Flats for my Pedulla from Mojo’s Music, and I have not them on yet. I am happy with flats since I don’t really slap on my Pedulla.
