Hey all. Just got this new-to-me MIJ Mustang Bass that I’m really excited about. I’d been on the hunt for a black one for a while and plan to make some modifications over time to make it my perfect Mustang!

The first thing I noticed after getting it in was this grain irregularity on the back of the neck around the fifth fret, which was more pronounced than on any other bass I have:

As someone not very experienced in woodworking, I am struggling to determine whether this is a mineral streak or a knot. If it is a knot, I am trying to figure out if one this large should have me concerned about the stability of the neck over time as I am hoping to keep this bass for years if I can! I am less worried about the visual aspect, I think it has a lot of character :)

I wouldn't worry about it either - if it develops into a problem in the future as it dries further you can decide then if you want a new neck. There's not much you can do at this point to prevent or address a problem, it's a one-piece neck and it is what it is. Which is nice looking IMHO :smug:
