Lakland Skyline 44-64 P/J custom neck

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the Lakland Skyline 44-64 P/J custom neck and could compare it directly to a Fender American Professional II Jazz (2021). I love the P bass sound but much prefer a neck like my Fender J. (I already own the Aerodyne and Duff McKagan Jazz Special.)
I’ve been on the hunt for the Lakland mentioned but it looks like my only option is going to buy one new sight unseen. Also, does it pound like I want a P bass to pound? Any other thoughts on the 44-64 P/J?

I love mine! Very much a jazz neck, and a killer pbass sound when soloed. Worked just great a couple of weeks ago at the Carolina Country Music Festival where I was subbing with Channing Wilson.

Nice! Thanks man. I was pretty disappointed that the Duff J Special turned out to be not much of a jazz neck after all, except for a little thinner front to back. I am definitely leaning toward selling that one and picking up the 44-64 custom

Funny - I actually played an ash/maple US Lakland 44-64 Custom today, definitely a '60s J-style neck. P pickup roared through the little Ampeg combo it was plugged into, and the 2 pickups together had a good blend. J pickup soloed does what you'd expect.
Was a great bass, stupendous materials and craftsmanship but I preferred the tone of the Suhr Antique J-bass sitting next to it.
They were both $3600 so I left with a set of D'Addario Chromes. :smug:

I also have a fretless Skyline 44-60 "Joe Osborne" (may be selling soon), similar neck profile but different finish than the bass I played today (Skyline = satin, US = their oil or wax treatment).

Be aware that most Skylines these days are monstrously heavy, often well above 10 lbs and sometimes into 11-12 pound range.
Bass Central and Sweetwater list weights of in-stock basses.
I've seen a few Skyline 44-64s on TB classifieds over the years, there's a Deluxe available right now (no connection):
For Sale/Trade - 2019 Lakland Skyline Deluxe 44-64

Also at one point Lakland made a Skyline "Duck Dunn" model (P pickup with J neck).

@Calebmundy - That's a b@d@ss action shot! Play it in good health!!

That’s some great info! Thank you for that.

I had one for a while, but sold it because I liked my p-bass with jazz neck more. The Lakland neck is fantastic. I still have a Decade which has the same neck.

If you're going to buy one sight unseen, contact Lakland to get on their email list. They send out weekly updates.
That’s helpful, thank you. What was the P with J neck that you liked better?

The neck on the Lakland will have a 1.5” nut, and is slightly thinner and slightly flatter than most any jazz bass neck. Two of my Laklands have this neck- US 4460 and Skyline J Sonic- it’s definitely my favorite feeling neck.

I briefly had one of the Lakland Skyline 44-64 basses with only the P pickup, not sure if it was a Duck Dunn model or not (had the best looking seafoam green finish with matching headstock, blocks AND binding). It was a great bass with the perfect J neck, but the tone (on that one at least) was a bit more modern and aggressive than what I was looking for at the time so I let it go in favor of a Fender AVRI ‘62 P.

I still dream about how great that neck felt and would love to have another one someday!
