LDS Cab in 4 or 8 ohms

Hey everyone! This is my first post on TalkBass and I was hoping all you guys and gals could give me some advice. I’m going to order a cab from LDS. It’s going to be a vertically aligned 212 with a 6.5 mid driver rated at 900w. I’m thinking of pairing it with either a GK MB500 (350w/500w) or a 700RB-ll (320w/480w). What I’m trying to decide is if I should get the cab in 8 or 4 ohms. If I understand correctly an amp can put out transient peaks up to twice its output...? Should that happen at 4 ohms with either amp I’d be over the cabs rated power. At 8 ohms I’d be alright. I don’t plan on getting another cab so future expansion isn’t a consideration. I just want to get the most “safe” power out of my head without damaging the cab. Thanks for your help!

Given my experience with owning basically what you are looking to have Don make you you will not ever want for a second cabinet. Go 4Ω.

Don is still around.

Get the 4 ohm version unless you see yourself running two cabs at some point.
Then you want two 8 ohm cabs for a total 4 ohm load
What Chef said. I had an almost identical cab built for me by Don in 4 ohms. I never felt the need to be any louder with a 600 watt amp head.

Unless you are going to play insanely loud, get the 4 ohm cab.

Can you confirm the drivers? If they are 3012lfs as @Downunderwonder noted 450w is the RMS rating for one of them, so double: 900, like you noted.

See the program rating below that takes into account those fleeting transients.

This is, again, for one 3012lf:

Two will have a program rating of upwards of 1800w! :wideyed::wideyed::wideyed:

If the woofers are the Eminence 3012LF you should be hunky dory at 4 ohm, some would even say the amps are too small.

The woofers are 3012HO’s. I’ve spoken to Don a few times since the holidays and he recommended the HO’s based on their efficiency and the cab design. I shall defer to his knowledge and expertise because I’m thee most unscientific guy you’ll find!

On a separate note, that seems to mean that he's adding another 100w RMS total cab power handling on due to... the mid driver? Not to doubt Don, but is it accurate that the mid would see/take so many watts when running at the extreme (400 per 12, 100w to the mid)? Or am I missing something?

That’s was my main concern, those fleeting transients. I looked up the HO’s and they're 400 rms/800 peak so 1600 available for those peaks.
