Left Harvey ground zero

Sooooo, they weren't allowing anyone back on the island at first. I snuck on via boat last Saturday. This is the current status of my vintage Ampeg collection. I don't have an rig to gig with at this point.

Our lot is nine feet above sea level. Our house is on five-foot stilts. We had about 18 inches of water inside.

Our house is still standing. Many aren't. Total loss on contents and interior.

I can't begin to imagine. Our neighborhood is the highest in Virginia Beach and we're only 29' above sea level. If I flood, the balance of the town will be completely submerged. My heart goes out to you and yours'...glad to hear you're safe & sound.

Everybody keep their fingers crossed: Irma is skipping our direction. Take the necessary measures and precautions.

@beans-on-toast, is there anything to be done? I'm not too worried about the speaker cabinets... I can salvage the drivers and recone them myself. What about the amps? They have all been submerged in salty, silty, sandy, nasty water.

Sorry that the damage was inflicted Chris.

It really depends on the extent of the damage. If mold has set in to the wood, sometimes a steam cleaning or scrubbing with a borax paste/water solution will work. If the wood has delaminated, it can be stabilized and reglued. Worst case, sections have to be replaced.

When it comes to electronics, it depends on the amp and how fast you get to it.

With vintage amps sometimes you can get lucky by flushing it out well, immerse it rinse, repeat, with deionized water. If you can't get deionized water, as a last resort use tap water. You have to get all the corrosive compounds and salt out. Do not turn the pots, slide switches, etc. The faster you can get to it after the salt water has drained, the better. Otherwise rust sets in. Dry it well with fans to remove all traces of moisture. Then clean with a product such as Safety Wash., this helps remove traces of organics. Use Q-tips and go over and under everything with a close attention to detail.

The pots and contacts need to be cleaned with deoxit.

Lost cause amps will have salts penetrated into the circuit boards. This changes their conductivity and shorts can occur. It is very difficult to restore these damaged boards.

All the best.
