Live session advice

Hi Lynn

I'm doing a tour next month which will involve a couple of live radio sessions.

I don't normally use a mic live but I'm considering getting one for these sessions. It's a 10 piece band and I will probably be in same room as at least some of the other instruments (maybe all) so it's sort of half way between a live gig situation and a studio situation.

What I am planning to do is use my pickup and also take a separate line out from a mic for the engineer to blend in. I think there would be too much bleed to only use a mic.

How would you normally approach these type of things? Is the Shure Beta 56 good in there type of situations?

Thanks
Dan

Dan, yes I use the Beta 56 stuffed into the bridge for live as well as studio. Some studios have baffles that they can use to help isolate some instruments. If you are using an amp in the studio, consider having them mike the amp. If you really like the raw direct sound from your pickup, then give them the straight line to the board. Usually, if I can only use a mike, I prefer that.
I always recommend getting in touch with the studio and engineer well in advance to discuss your wishes. That way they can prepare in advance to accommodate you. Most engineers are very happy to work with you and really appreciate someone taking the time to reach out in advance. Good Luck, Lynn
