French bassist Lorraine Campet can be seen with various symphonies, chamber groups, and a wide variety of performance settings. She also teaches bass master classes and is an accomplished violinist.

I first saw her at the Bloomington ISB in 2019. I had never heard of her before and she just crushed the performance. Just absolutely phenomenal bass playing from start to finish. I got to talk to her for a few minutes the next day, and she’s also a very nice person. She is also very small of stature (I felt like Lurch standing next to her), which makes her technique all the more impressive. I send links of her videos to all my students of lesser wingspans to show that length is not a requirement to play beautifully and with absolute authority.

For small folks with tiny hands there is evidently a benefit to a raised saddle. This has the effect of lowering string tension, and is endorsed by Thierry Barbe especially for small players. A good luthier can make one from scratch, it does not have to be as elaborate as this example.
