Hey bass nerds,
Been having a problem lately with some basses of mine. I am noticing this low frequencey bump every time i play notes on the E and A strings. The frequency number is around the 60 or 70hz mark, I got this estimation by recording myself into my DAW and using Pro Q 3 to see. Now, I'm well aware that due to the thickness of the E and A strings, this is something that happens naturally. However, where its the most problem is playing at medium sized venues thru 8x10 cabs (or similar). The D and G strings barely cut thru compared to the low E and A. It's become so noticable that I have had to adjust how I play bass lines as to maintain some sonic consistency thru the amp and thru the FOH mix.
I'm wondering if anyone who has encountered this problem has found some solution to this? Either a technical approach or even a piece of gear that helped tame this bump. I've tried adjusting my right hand technique so that I play a lot softer on the A's and E's, but that doesn't always work out depending on the style of the song (e.g a rock tune that requires me to dig in with a pick). I've also tried out various compression pedals but to no avail.
For reference, the rig that I use:
1969 Fender Jazz Bass/Serek Midwestern 2
GHS Strings, Nickel, Medium Light Gauge (I've also used Stringjoys and Fodera Nickels and Steels)
I've been considering buying an EQ pedal, but before I spent that $$ I'm curious to see what people's experiences have been. Thanks!
