Double Bass Magnetic pickup for wav4c/ub804

Howdy! I greatly prefer upright position for wrist and hand comfort, but I am not interested the piezo sound.
I'm looking at either the NS wav4c or the Ibanez ub804 for their 34" scale.
Can I just route a hole and wire up a p bass pickup in there and tilt each half of the pickup to match the radius?
I know there's the ns cr basses that have those circle emg pickups, but thats $5k plus it's 41" scale.

You can totally do this, if you have the skills to do the routing, especially since you'll be routing on a curved surface. But rockabilly guys have been using p-bass pickups on their uprights for years in Japan.

Here's a guy who took a flat electric bass pickup and added Neodymium magnets to even out the response:

I've used one of these:

and personally preferred the sound of the piezo (a full circle) to the magnetic, but that may have had a lot to do with the preamp. I think it has potential.

So if you like that kind of sound, and can do the woodwork, go for it. Don't forget you'll have to get the pickup wires to the preamp/output area.

That's super cool I will definitely check it out! I think it would be worth the trouble.

I saw this a little while ago and thought of this discussion:
