It actually says in the part; "geth." is short for getheilt (or geteilt), German for "divided".At 26, you can take a break ;-)

The piece was premiered in Berlin. He wrote for what he knew existed.Great stuff.
Interesting that a piece written in 1896 has so much bass going down below E to low C territory.
At that time basses in England often were 3 strings, while perhaps a lot of bassists in Vienna and Hamburg were running around with 5 stringers.
