I am gonna go a different route and try out the new Basssman Hybrid line. I have read lots of good stuff about them and want to give them a try. I am currently running a GK MB800. I like having the extra headroom of the 800 but have never needed the full power. But with that said.... the Bassman 800 is only $200 more for the extra 300 watts. Just curious if there might be any reason not to opt for the 800 over the 500?

I have the Bassman 500, it's very loud with my neo 410 cab/ cabs! I could not imagine needing an 800...but for $200 more why not. I think you'll be happy with either one; it's a very versatile light weight amp that can comp a tone close to a tube head.

My biggest concern is that I think the 800 is newer where the 500 has a slightly more proven track record. I too doubt that I would ever need the additional oomph...

There's a lot to be said for a proven track record as you mentioned above. If the 500 Watt version will cover most of what you want, and you have the GK on hand if more power is needed, the couple hundred in savings might make it an even merrier Christmas. :)

As a final thought though, if you should still be on the fence, I never heard a bass player saying they wish their amp had less power,...or a pilot wishing they had a slower jet or less fuel, or a person in a fire-fight wishing they had brought less ammunition... :D

Exactly.... but I will take this opportunity to spend less... which I seem unable to grasp on most days ;)
Being a responsible adult with good impulse control is not necessarily fun "in the moment", but when one can stay focused on the bigger picture, it does have long term advantages...and you're setting a good example for the rest of us!

While trying out jazz basses at a local shop the other day I made the mistake of plugging into that exact rig. Major league GAS ensued...
