Hey guys... I need some advice! I know very little about amplifiers and cabs. So please steer me in the right direction.

I have a Mesa M6 Carbine amp. I was playing the other day in a rehearsal before a show with a 4 ohm Mesa Powerhouse 112. I wasn't pushing the amp all that hard and I had definitely had it up to this level before.

During one of the songs a strange smell occurred... Then a small amount of smoke and then a scratchy fizzle sound and then the rig stopped producing sound. The power light stayed on and it didn't look like the fuse went out.

The smell was definitely present and then we thought the cab was on fire... We took the cab outside, took the grill off, took the speaker out and didn't see any damage (but did smell a smell in the cab...).

Well, I still thought the head was the problem. I just took the top off the head and didn't see anything that appeared to have been burning... It looks pretty pristine in there.

So:
Should I still send the amp off to Mesa? I don't have very much expendable income right now if the amp is not the issue... :(

I have another Powerhouse 112 (8 Ohm this time). Should I be afraid to plug the amp in and try it with my other cab?

Any suggestions and questions? Thanks friends.

I suggest that you try the amp with a known good cabinet to see if the amp is the problem. The M6 has DC offset protection, so unless the protection circuit has also failed, it shouldn't damage a good cabinet.

If there is a problem with the amp, you can always call customer service and they will be able to help you get this resolved.
