Bummer that Model J's dont exist in a 5 string pickup, let alone a 19mm set. According to Dimarzio tech.

Anyone know of a pickup set that is in the tonal ballpark of the Dimarzio Model J's (thick, fat J pickup) in a 5 string 19mm set?

thx

Contact Nordstrand. I am certain they can help you out.

They are wonderful to deal with and work quickly.

I actually have a set of their NJ5FS humcancelling 19mm in there now. very nice, super dynamic and lots of clarity, but need more midrange meat from it (its an ash maple bass, so not super surprising). The top and bottom are lovely though. I might try running a pedal preamp to get a little more midrange oomph before swapping the pups.

My point was that if you contact them and tell them your tonal goals, they will likely custom wind for you if they don't have an off the shelf product which fits.

*also, is your NJ5FS wired in series?

I'd be surprised if you couldn't get the mid-range you're after by just getting the blend right. I was just playing on my Big Singles & if I blend a little towards the bridge I get mad high-mids & if I blend towards the neck I get low-mids.

IMO its the inherent voicing of the bass, its ash maple and has a pretty thin midrange. I've experimented plenty with the current setup, and havent found the right balance.

Perhaps, I have a good relationship with Stew and Carey. Might hit them up.

Nordstrand sounds like good advice. I’ve also found some stock Delanos that can cop a similar sound - not sure of the models. I’ve also had “overwound” Fralins that were close to the Dimarzio sound.
