Moog MF-101 Alternatives

As we all know this got discontinued and is now $400+ on Reverb. Are there any low pass filter alternatives that are on par with the Moog but for less than that? I've seen the EHX Blurst and the Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe which add the tap tempo, but both are missing some of the key features. The Blurst way more than the Xerograph

Not to my knowledge but if you're patient, I've seen some 101s go from $250-350 recently. Prices on the 102 haven't really skyrocketed yet either if you're looking for a very good ring mod/trem.

There are these on Reverb..

Not tried one though and they're pretty much the same price as a Moog MF-101.

I've seen some original MF-101's go on eBay far cheaper than $400 recently, so you may be lucky if you hold out.

Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe is pretty similar especially with the slow synthy sweeps with an expression pedal.

The Source Audio C4 and Spectrum can also emulate the Moog and do a lot more besides.

It won't help your GAS but a MF-101 on its own is a great filter. With an expression pedal it's an amazing filter, really flexible. Combine it with a Moog CP-251 and it is out of this world.

Is there a Xerograph with tap-tempo now? I've never seen that

Source Audio Spectrum. It’s essentially all the good stuff from the moog and none of the bad stuff (large size, terrible bypass, power requirements)

I sold my 101 after I tried the spectrum. Side by side the spectrum just wins. I wouldn’t go as far to say they are exactly the same exact sound, but it’s so close you wouldn’t notice.

This is cool to hear- I haven't played through the Moog in years, but the C4 (which has all the Spectrum sounds plus synth voices) is really impressing me and got me on the fence about selling my long-trusted Xerograph Deluxe!

“terrible bypass” is an odd phrase to describe the best always on gain/preamp in the industry. For me, whenever I build a board around that amazing gain circuit, I am always deeply impressed. Doesn’t work great In complicated setups though. Needs to be a 3-5 pedal board with the Moog as its soul.

Unless you want to deliberately limit yourself for one pedal, and like going through building a pedlaboard around that one pedal, this seems like an extreme reaction to a notoriously noisy pedal. The mod for it seems more reasonable than limiting one's sonic palette. I do like that you're thinking of a good way to use it to your advantage for your desired tone, that's a great adaptation. But I'd choose the Spectrum or C4 that can load the Moog MF101 patch right in there for you and do thousands of other insanely awesome sounds.

What you are missing is that the always on gain is the exact beauty of the pedal. But that’s fine. Enjoy your Spectrum.

To each their own. I just wouldn't want to be tied to having to have a certain number of pedals for better interaction because of an extra gain stage for my active signal that already runs fairly hot with some pedals as it is. And I'm thankful Moog did not use that on the Phaser or Bass MuRF, but the drive knob achieves the same thing it seems.

It’s a subjective thing. Some love it, some don’t. For me it wasn’t an ideal thing for my clean tone. So I put it in a loop of an LS-2 to be able to use it. I mean the tone of that pedal is worth the hassle, it was by far my favorite filter pedal. But that’s just showing you how much I was willing to put up with for it, and how the Spectrum changed all of that because now I do t have to do all of that.

I agree with this up to the point where you say moog is king. I like hte XD way more sonically, it is really an amazing pedal. I bought the MF-101 when they announced it was getting discontinued, and while I like the sound i think the filter in the XD is a richer sound, esp when used with an expression pedal. Given the size and the lack of a bypass it got moved to my guitar rig where the always-on drive isn't that big of a deal (I also suck at guitar so its def a demotion).

I actually *really* like the filter in the Minitaur, you can route audio thru it if you keep the gate open - i wish Moog would put that into a pedal (hopefully no one tells me its the same filter, to me they sound pretty different).
