Mustang PJ - Overall length

Hello Fender Mustang P/J owners,
Could anyone please tell me the overall length of the bass? Measured standing up from the floor to the top of the headstock? I can't find that detail in any spec lists. Trying to determine if it will fit in my Mono Vertigo guitar-sized case. Thanks!

It’s 42.5”. The other issue is the size of the headstock with the tuners. In my Mono sleeve, I can zip up a Bronco but not a Mustang due to tuner size.

If only they built these with a smaller headstock... I remember my Warwick short scale being much easier to fit in guitar cases.

p.s. Even regular Mustang guitars, not the Mustang basses, have trouble fitting into many guitar cases. Believe it or not, even though a Mustang guitar is a 24" scale and a Strat/Tele is a 25.5" scale, the Mustang is longer because of bridge placement, and most cases are designed for Strat/Tele. A Mono can usually handle a Mustang guitar well enough (not perfectly, but well enough). But a bass, forget about it. Ideal would be a case just about 2" longer than your average guitar case, like for a baritone, and with a large headstock area to handle the tuner size.

p.p.s. Short of a hard case, the Fender Urban Short Scale Bass Gig Bag is probably your best bet. It fits the Fender short scales perfectly. Not only that, it's a great bag for larger Fender guitars, like the Mustang, Jaguar, or Jazzmaster.

Thanks @honeyiscool ! You have described my situation to a "T". I have the (limited run) Fender Modern Player Short Scale Jazz Bass and it's 41.5". Fits way too tight in the Mono case at the headstock (length and width with tuners). I was hoping the Mustang was a bit shorter. I imagine the regular bass-sized case would swallow the short scale. Oh well...

I do have the Fender Urban SS bass gig bag and it's great for around town, but I do travel by air to conferences with a women's worship band. I used to take my Cort Action Junior that I upgraded with a Bart pup and Hipshot hardware, which fits great in the Mono. But my jazz bass sounds so much better! (although it's 2.5 lbs heavier than the Cort - ugh!!) I found a Mustang PJ online that was much lighter and was considering that as sort of a happy medium.

This last trip I took the ss jazz bass in a GigBlade Sliver guitar-sized case. It fit fine and I liked the concept of the side-carry feature, but I think it was designed for broader shoulders and narrower hips. It didn't fit me as well. So as you said, a hard case may be the way to go - at least for flying. And I'd feel much better about a Mustang PJ as checked baggage than my precious jazz bass.

I like that. But most guitar cases don't have that kind of headstock real estate, so I think for a guitar case to fit a bass, it needs to have a very small headstock horizontally as well, something like a Seagull headstock that doesn't flare outward at the top.

I like a lot of those Chowny basses. Their bases look killer. I only wish they made 5s.

I have an ESP HSC that fits my (MIJ) Mustang Bass like a glove: no tightness or slop at all. Unfortunately, there is no designation (alpha-numeric or otherwise) on/in it anywhere other than a big "ESP" on the outside and I picked it up used so have no idea what "model" of guitar or bass it was originally built to accommodate.

I've been considering getting one of the new Mustang PJ basses, which is why I was looking for cases and googled my way into this conversation.

My Hagstrom is exactly 42". It came in this Baldwin case when I got it off ebay which is basically just a big rectangle and not molded in the inside. The case is a little too big, but it fits and a simple velcro strap keeps the base secure. I was considering getting an SG/EB3 case as the Hagstrom design was obviously inspired by the SG.

Here it is - enough room to fit two fingers at the top of the headstock. Just about a perfect fit.

Thanks for the pics. Do you feel there's enough padding at the bottom (with the inner pad removed) to adequately protect it? Not a major drop of course, but normal use and travel? I'm thinking airplane overhead compartment or gate checked (not through baggage claim).
