My Amp is ****ing Up!

I recently bought a Genz-Benz 135-watt amp, and I like the sound, but it crackles and pops and sometimes completely shorts for a few seconds when I put the volume past 5, I've already sent it to the company once and they didn't seem to do a good job.
Does anybody have an idea of whats going on?

Oh yeah, when I took it back to the store to show the people, with a different bass, it cracked there too, and sometimes it plays fine and then the next time I turn it on it messes up.

I had a Yamaha PB-1 preamp that cut out intermitantly on me. I had it in the shop 2 times while under warranty and 3 times after it expired. Had all the controls and contacts resoldered checked for cold solder joints, had two pots replaced, ect... The problem was it would not crap out in the shop, not once, only at practice or at gigs. I couldn't replicate the problem while in the shop. It worked flawlessly. I had to get rid of it.
If you can get the amp to malfunction in the shop, a good tech can trace the problem and fix it. If he can't, find another one, cause he ain't a good tech. There's no reason to deal with a piece of equipment that's not 100%.

My guitarist has the same problem with my dads Fender Super Reverb. People say its the valves. It may be that i don't know but if you could find out what the problem is, please email me!

Thanx I'd really appreciate it

Yes, thats what I'm worried about, luckily last time I got it to **** up, but sometimes at my house it works fine for hours, then when I crank it past 5 sometimes, it sttuters, and shorts for few seconds, and then the volume cuts in half for about a minute, then it's back to normal. It pisses me off! I wanna break it, but i need to get a replacement.

Bassline, I'm curious as to whether you have the 7200-12 or the 7200-15.

I would suggest that you contact G.B. and explain to them that the in warrantee repair was unsuccesful and that you expect them to repair the amp at no charge. I am assuming that you bought the amp new.

It's surprising how much a company will do sometimes to satisfy the customer.

As an electronics tech, I can tell you that an intermittent problem can be really aggravating. There are methods to make an intermittent show up most of the time. A hair dryer and a can of chill spray is probably the most effective way to isolate thermal problems which your amp seems to have.

It also is a great help to the tech making the repairs if you can give good details such as how long does it take for the problem to appear. If you have a headphone jack see if the popping comes thru the headphones. that alone can break the circuit down some for diagnosis. If you have the 7200-15 I would substitute the 12AX7 tube on general principle. Contrary to what you may hear or read tubes have a higher failure rate than any other parts in a tube amp. I'm not familiar with G.B. but if the heat sink for the output transistors is exposed at the back of the amp, check it for excessive heat. Check the heat sink when the amp is warmed up but not acting up to feel what is normal. Good luck with it.

Basslines,
Do as pkr2 suggests, get in touch with GB. Tell them your problem and ask for any authorized service centers in your area. I've never had a problem getting warranty service done even when I didn't send the card in, as long as you have a copy of the sales recipt. Believe me, they want to keep you as a future customer and not loose you over what could be a minor problem. Good luck!

Well, I wish it was that simple, when we returned the amp to have it fixed, my dad lost the warranty card and we didnt find it until a few weeks later *sigh*, so we sent it in, but i dont think they will accept it. So that means we have to deal directly thru the store.

Yeah Bassline, nothing is ever simple, huh. Did you buy the amp locally or mail order? I don't believe a reliable manufacturer would refuse a photostat of the bill of sale as proof of warrantee status. By the way, you really don't have to deal with the manufacturer through the store.
