I participated in the last winter build off for my first bass build, a mikro scale oddity detailed here:
My musical stylings have changed some since then. I bought a five string active Jackson CBX that I adore and I have grown to really love having a B string. I've seen a bunch of awesome bassists playing Danelectros over the last year and have really grown to like the shape.I decided to build an over-the-top homage to the lowly Masonite wonder. This build will be a 36" scale, neck-through, headless, active five string made of local maple, walnut, and cherry, finished in clear shellac.
Hardware:
Nova headless bridge and headpiece courtesy of Andre Passini here on Talkbass
GM noiseless Jazz rails
Artec SE-3 preamp
Spoke wheel truss rod
Stratocaster style jack plate
Woods:
The neck is going to be made of curly maple with epoxy coated walnut fretboard
The wings will be a sandwich of flame maple, cherry, and book matched hard maple burl across the entire back.
The fretboard, top flame maple, and back maple burl all have pretty extensive holes and bark inclusions. They're getting filled with epoxy resin using Eye Candy Pigments' Ryujin Blue which kind of matches bits of my MoP inlaid knobs.
Today I made my first cuts, getting the pieces squared and cut to width for the neck section, and split the section of flame maple for the book matched wings. I'd already had my section of burl split by a friend. I had already messed around with epoxy filling a run of bark inclusions in my fretboard walnut but realized today that a big hole also needed filling. I dragged the book matched sets and the fretboard home to fill them. I'll get them back in the shop over the next couple days to thickness plane.
My tracing of a Danelectro DC '59 from the local guitar shop. I need to mess around with where to cut the wings from the stencil. The final build will end up wider than the original due to the extra string and the width of the Nova bridge.
A book matched pair of hard maple burl boards. This was one of two sections of a 10' board that were similarly wild. They'll cover the entire back of the bass.
A book matched pair of flame maple boards with a fun knot full of holes. These will be the top laminate of the wings with the knots sitting at the base of the horns.
Here's the walnut for my fretboard. I already filled the main run of inclusions but found out today that I'll need to take a little bit of that big hole too.
Here's the maple boards full of epoxy. The walnut is filled now too, just out of the picture. I'll bring them back to the shop on Wednesday or Thursday to clean up and thickness plane.
