So my Kingfisher arrived and overall, I'm pretty happy with it. All the downside was no surprise cuz I had read a lot of reviews (the heavy weight, the pots with weird tapers, the buzz). The good points of the bass more than make up for it. It looks great, is a joy to play and has great tone. Mine weighs in at a hefty 10lbs, which I don't mind too much. The pots obviously I can swap out... but the buzz.....Here is where things gets murky. People are speculating that it comes from the pickups. I REALLY don't want to replace the pickups cuz they sound fantastic. I noticed that the area around the output jack is not shielded and the wire coming from the pickups is just unshielded push-back wire. The channel that the pickup wires run through is also unshielded. Before I get happy with my shielding paint and replace the pickup wires, do you think that will help? Most of the body cavity is already shielded. I've never had humbuckers that hum (have you?) so I'm very skeptical that those are to blame. That's why I'm laying it on you guys... Do you think the problem is the pickups OR the shielding? Thanks in advance.

I drove 30 miles to play one of those today, the lighter finish, & it had been sold during their Black Friday sale.
Yes, it's heavy, I've played it a few times before. Mr. Smith definitely knows how to build a bass!

Yes, I have had humbuckers that hummed, to be completely silent an instrument needs two things:
humbuckers
shielding

MIM Fender Blacktop was noisy, but I rewired the pickups in parallel (from series) & shielded it:

add: I think noisy humbuckers is a thing with PRS, because I also experienced very noisy humbuckers in a Custom 24 guitar

FWIW, I got zero noise from the Kingfisher at the Fender/PRS/Ibanez dealer, but I never get noise in there.

I found mine for $450 online. The same seller has five more 2014 Kingfishers right now for the same price. How does one come to acquire that many identical models all the from the same year in roughly the same condition? It's weird.
