Big shout out to Greg @RocketMusic for making this happen. This is my fourth or fifth purchase from him and I cannot recommend this guy enough. He is the perfect combination of local customer service and long distance shipping.
What we have here is a G&L Custom Shop JB5. G&L's Custom Shop is fairly new debuting in January 2018. Main differences over the "option order" models include hand selected woods, thin skin finish and a skilled individual who is responsible for overseeing the entire building process. What this meant to me was higher overall quality, which is interesting given G&L generally makes an overall very high quality product.
This specific bass is 11 years in the making. Not that it took 11 years to make but it took me 11 years to find this specific package - bright yellow 5 string passive jazz bass with matching headstock, maple board, white pearl block inlay and white pearl pickguard, and having a comfortable neck profile / string spacing.
G&L discontinued offering Yellow Fever as standard paint a few years ago. They fortunately had enough left over and were willing to use it for this build. As far as specs, this one is pretty standard. I added handwound pickups as my big splurge because why not, right?
Greg originally quoted a very loose four month delivery time. I placed my deposit on November 20th and the wait began. The bass was delivered on April 22nd. Would have been the 19th but I requested a delay due to travel. Almost five months to the day. Not bad at all.
I am overall very satisfied with this purchase. There is nothing I would change on it an everything turned out to be exactly as expected. The pickups were a nice surprise. I'm not good at describing tone but they sound good to my ears and that's all that matters.
In the Custom Shop world, G&L is a very good value. Options and pricing can be found in this thread:
