Hello TB. Sorry in advance for the long post. I could use some help with deciding how to handle a dissapointing eBay purchase. I just received the bass and it has many issues, including:
1) The finish appears to have originally been gloss, and was sanded to "matte" (the chrome control plate was also sanded).
2) The control cavity is covered with black tape (this was not shown in the photos- only the upper half of the back was.
3) The pickguard seems to have been painted black. I don't mind a black pickguard but the old color is visible in spots.
4) The output jack is intermittently making major crackling noise (this I assume is a fairly easy fix).

The strings are totally gone but that was no surprise. It needs a setup but I haven't tried to mess with it pending a decision on whether to keep it. I think it'll play alright.

The eBay listing said " Fender jazz bass, mim, deluxe series wifi here has active pickups, upgraded electronics and upgraded tuners from a standard model. Very cool flat black finish with rosewood fretboard.everything on this item works as it should, I have included lots of pictures to accurately depict the condition as it is a used item."

The photos in the listing were in low resolution so there was no way to see any of the issues listed above. The seller only had 2 feedbacks (both positive) but I saw the item and decided to take a last-minute chance- the price seemed good assuming it was in decent condition. The seller was good at communicating and he packed the bass very well (no case). He seemed like a nice guy so I was very surprised when I saw the condition of the bass.

I'm not exactly sure how to handle this, as I've had great luck before with three basses I got via eBay. So my questions are:

1) With all of these issues is $290 a fair price for this bass?
2) Would you try to return it or get some money back from the seller?
3) If you had a bass in this condition what would you do with it?

I'm sure some of you have been through similar situations. Thanks in advance for any guidance you might be able to provide.

I'm a huge MIM fan. Sorry, but that is one of the biggest rip offs I've seen in a long time. It has a crappy finish. It looks like it has been stored on a patio in a beach town for most of the sixteen years it's been in existence. I might buy it it during one of my frequent pawn shop excursions, but I wouldn't give more the $75.00 for it. Seller totally misrepresented the condition.

Thanks for the responses thus far. I guess I shouldn't be surprised at the prevailing opinion being to return the bass due to undisclosed issues. I'm so disappointed (after having such good luck before) but I guess this happens. My bad for taking the risk on an unproven seller.

For what you paid I don't think it's worth it. If it was $100 I'd say replace the pickguard, set it up with new strings, and don't sweat the funky finish. I would reach out to the seller and express your issues clearly but as nicely as you can. Hopefully they will take it back with no problems. You can also call eBay 1st to see exactly what your options are. You might end up eating shipping but you'll just have to chock it up as a learning experience if you do. Good luck with it, I hope it works out for you.

Not sure what your market is like in N.C., but here in Cali (I split time between NoCal and SoCal), the going price for a clean MIM j or p is $275 to $$325; maybe $350 if it is virtually new. IMO, MIMs are usually superior to any Squire you'll find used. Particularly if it's from the late 00's to the present. The necks are sturdier, the fretwork is cleaner, the finishes are harder and the stock pickups and bridges are better. IMO, the Current MIM Standad Ps and Js are the best value for a new bass on the market. Unfortunately, the ones with Rosewood are seeing a price increase and may not be available for long. That's one reason why I recently added a new MIM Mustang PJ to my arsonel.

I paid $300 for a mint condition MIM P (with case) last year on ebay. It's great. I thought the Deluxe Jazz might be worth a bit more. This one definitely isn't! I simply rushed this decision and now will have to deal with the fallout.

Sorry to say, but you got ripped off. From what I'm seeing in the pictures it doesn't even look like a real Fender. But, I'm no expert. The neck if real is worth a hundred, but that body is worthless IMHO.

I feel bad for you and hope it works out, otherwise you've got a lot of work to do to get that into better shape.

Yeah ... but sorry ... how does it play? How does it feel when played?
If it's ok and having seen the low buying price you may consider it as a good base for some relicing job although I would change the tuners with a set of reliced reverse tuners ... they are too shiny if compared to the rest of the bass and i can't stand the shape of the MIM tuners personally ... for me, I'll keep it if it sounds ok

Yeah. Send it back. Start off with a very measured, professional message, no anger, just listing the issues that were not mentioned in the listing. Do all your messaging through Ebay. "Look closely at the pictures" has no standing. Don't argue with the seller, just the one message, give him 5 days for a response and then message eBay. Send them the listing #. They will have all images and revisions archived for a while. Advise them that you have "as received" pictures available.

Save the HTML for the listing now ("Save as___full webpage") and print the listing out, preferably as a .pdf saved to your computer.

It may take longer then you like if you have to go through eBay, but they will resolve this. I would simultaneously go to PAYPAL (assuming that's how you paid), just to get it on the record, but advise them that you are claiming through eBay as well.
