NBD: Music Man John Myung Bongo 6 HH

00.JPG

I was expecting to see "Artist Series" but mine came with just "Bongo" on it. Hmm...

01.JPG

Anyway...here it is!

02.JPG

Can't say I like how the pickups look. I want exposed pole pieces. I was wondering if there had rail-type magnets inside. (Scroll down to see inside the pickup.)
The divided fretboard doesn't look bad, though I know that quite a lot of people dislike the it.

03.JPG

Only TWO control knobs. Volume and 5-way rotary switch.

04.JPG

Yes, it's 14mm. This is what made me buy this bass without hesitation. No, I don't slap at all, so this is just perfect for me.

05.JPG

As you know, the main idea of this bass is fitting 6 strings on a 5-string neck.

06.JPG

Love the signature etched on the neck plate!
The oil-finished neck feels very smooth. Thickness @ 1st fret = 20mm, @ 12th fret = 23mm.

"California Heritage Since 1974"

And I went a little further...

08.JPG

It's very simple. No EQ, just a switch. Position 1 & 5, which activates either the neck PU or the bridge PU alone, also switched the dual coils to parallel. The middle positions (2, 3 & 4) seem to have almost equal volume levels, unlike a common, linear blend pot which tends to have volume drop at the middle position. I didn't bother to disassemble everything and look at the circuit board for now, but maybe later I'll try.

This is the neck pickup. It has typical MM-type pole pieces with narrower spacings.

Side-by-side with my Bongo 5 HS. I have a bad feeling about this glossy black finish. There are dust and fingerprints all over it already. I'm so used to the cardinal red sparkle red which barely needs any care. This is going to be a whole new experience.

That’s a really specialized instrument. I hope it gives you what you want!

So you didn't see much of what it looks like before you bought it (neck finish, closed pole pieces, black gloss, etc.)?

I didn't imply that I had not studied the bass before buying. I rather meticulously checked every bit of information that I could find.

Neck finish: I knew about it. It feels smooth, just like my other oil-finished bass necks. (I have a few Warwick basses.)
Closed pole pieces: I didn't like them. I thought I might like it if I saw them in person. But no, I still don't like them.
Black gloss: I have another bass in glossy black, but I bought it used. Dust or fingerprints don't really stand out on that beaten-up less-glossy surface. This is my first time buying a brand-new glossy black. So this is new to me.

Don't know why I mentioned the neck finish...meant body finish. Anyway, yeah, not easy to keep clean, just like black cars. The nice thing about non-exposed poles, though, is no chance of the thunk or clack sound from your fingers touching them.

Yeah, I understand why the pickups are designed like this. They look kind of boring without exposed poles. But I'm sure I will get over it in a couple of weeks! I received this bass yesterday. :D

Impress us all by attempting to slap on that thing! Seriously, please don't...everyone and their mother already does on every other bass.

Looks like a very nice instrument but a black satin finish with exposed pole pieces would be amazing. No finger prints and almost invisible in the dark.

True about satin, but repeated use shows glossy spots, and gloss finishes are way more durable for gigging.
