NDD: Short Scales back in action! 90s Danelectro Longhorn Purple Sparkle!

Well sometimes you CAN find steals in big box stores. Backstory: for a while I had a baby blue 90s Korean reissue of these that I regret letting go of. I posted an ad wanting it back, and there way a guy selling a Longhorn of the same finish for around $600 CAD but the issue; he was located across the opposite side of the Province. After a month of no luck, I took down the listing.

Well lo and behold, Long and Mcquade out of all places had a Longhorn somebody traded in for their annual inventory blowout sale for $330 CAD! An hours wait before opening
today, and it was mine!! All for 6 easy monthly payments!:hyper::hyper:

I had no idea what it looked like and it really exceeded my expectations. The most unexpected part, it actually came with a hard case! and an old Fender style one at that! Does anyone have more info on these fender hardcases (it looks older than the bass lol). Did I mention the FINISH?

In terms of playability, I was surprised at the fretwork, no buzzing or dead spots up and down the neck. The only small issue is the intonation past the 12th, but with the of bridge what can you do? This time I'll wait before installing a new bridge, as I didn't like the tone much of the "adjustable" bridge, plus i'd have to redrill if I wanted a new bridge on it.

It definitely looks like it was taken care of, as my old Dano had to be semi-rescued from a closet after I got it. The only small issues are classic of these basses: crummy acoustic guitar strap buttons where the top likes to come off, and lifting tape, and the bridge slightly banana-ing on itself. These don't bother me outside of the strap button, as it plays really well outta the get go, so no real tweaks are needed. It does have rounds on it, so a bucket list plan is to get some la-bella flats on it soon enough. :bassist: For the weight-watchers out there, I was suprised this bass only weighs 5.6 lbs!

To add, I want to add some quick n dirty sound clips of the bass. Here's a couple straight from my DAW from a Behringer UMC202, raw.

Put some flats on that baby and a block of foam underneath the strings at the bridge and you'll have a tone monster. Great bass. Enjoy.

Congratulations on you new (old) Dano! I have one from the same vintage that I rescued. its a fun bass.

Mine had peeling tape, like yours, and all of them, so I pulled it off and cleaned it up with the intention of replacing the tape. It actually looks better without the tape so I left it that way. If you want to replace it, you can buy a roll of Dano tape on eBay.

The strap buttons are an issue. I put a new button underneath the top horn. The wood is solid there and it works great and the bass balances better. For the other strap button, I drilled it, glued in a dowel, covered it with a similar color touch up paint, drilled and mounted a new strap button.

Strings for a Dano? Flats of course! Right?

Well, actually I tried a few flats and they all killed the tone on mine. I have rounds on it, play on the neck pickup with the tone off, and it thumps like crazy. Just my experience with this particular Dano.

Does yours have the collapsing bridge problem? Its common. I shimmed mine with coins to prevent the bridge from collapsing any further. Worked great.View attachment 4581069
To quote all 3, yeah my dano was all 3 issues, I'll probably shim a coin under there to see if that works for me. I'll probably just red-drill and dowel the existing strap buttons, I found testing out the strap button at the top horn with tape that I didn't really like how horizontal it hangs from there. In terms of tape, I love the contrast between purple and white, so I'll keep the tape as is since the peeling isn't as bad as my old blue one.

I have been playing my Longhorn exclusively. I have Chromes on it that have been there for about 10 years. I wouldn't change the popsicle stick bridge. It's part of the unique sound of the Dano. As far as intonation goes all you can do is adjust the E and G strings. A and D won't be too far off. I use a Strat case for mine. Fits perfectly.
