want to upgrade my VM 70s Jazz Squire Pickups...

Looking for that vintage j bass sound..

not schooled on pickups

It does sound pretty good to begin with so maybe another upgrade that will be better than pickups?

flatwounds?

Hello. Which vintage Jazz Bass sound? Pre-CBS? 1960s CBS? 1970s? Marcus Miller? Flatwound? Roundwound?

Trying a different type of strings (for example switching to flatwound from roundwound) is a minimally invasive change that will let you narrow your historical/sonic focus to within a 15-year span. Then take it from there, continuing to home in on your target sound by more invasive measures (changing pickups, nut, bridge, etc.)

If you do decide to try different pickups, knowing which era or type of "vintage" sound you want will help you either choose from among the hundreds of stock pickup models (even most hand wound pickups are a standard offering by the maker) or work with a pickup maker to specify custom pickups.
