Ok, so this is weird. I removed the neck from my OLP to lube the truss wheel as it was hard to turn. Mind you it was butted up against the heel. I removed it, lubed it with vaseline and then tried to screw it back on. But now it does not screw in all the way. It sticks out significantly. See the attached pic.

Any idea what could be going on here?

The truss rod is now hitting the wood, preventing the nut from threading on straight. You are going to need to put pressure on the neck to move the rod away from the wood so the nut can screw on properly instead of cross threading. I agree about the vaseline, either use graphite (very very little, it wants to get everywhere), or a silicon based dry lube of some sort, again less is more.

UPDATE: So I tried something based on a suggestion on another forum. I removed the neck, slacked the truss wheel and tapped the headstock on the floor (carpeted) while pushing the truss rod in. It actually moved back. I can butt the wheel up against the heel. However, when I tighten the wheel, then loosen it the rod seems to move back out. I go to tighten it back up again and the wheel sticks out again.

Does this mean the truss rod needs to be re-anchored? Which would require removing the fretboard?

It sounds like this is the case

Great! :rollno: So, can a fretboard be removed and reattached without having to do a refret? I've quickly looked up on these boards how to remove a fretboard. Steaming with a clothes iron seems to be the easiest.....although I've never done this before.
