We are a 4 piece and the singer doesn't play guitar or anything. We really wanna do Tom Sawyer. It has been requested at almost every gig. I learned it but I'm just worried about it sounding to empty. Advice?

Fret buzz is a big part of his sound as well. I'm not saying that as a put down. Some of the greats incorporat(ed) it into their sound.

You can't fake it but so much.

That being said, a mild bit if overdrive will get you close enough for rock-n-roll.

That big fat synth at the start fills out a few dead spots, within the song. Singer, bass... guitar and drums? As long as everyone knows their parts, it can be done, but man... that opening sound sets the stage. I actually had synth sound bites for each of the notes used in "Tom Sawyer"... if you could run a click, sequencing them in, where appropriate, that would keep the singer from having to do it, himself... of course, he would need some type of synth... and know how to play it, of course.

Are you sure you don't want to play something from their debut album?

I know exactly what you mean. My keyboard player has a patch specifically for Tom Sawyer and that opening synth with the slow closing envelope is awesome. For authenticity's sake, get a sample pad and sample it. For pedalboard fun, I'd say try the classic octave>OD>filter, but have the filter be a low pass wah, so you can foot control it.

It's requested at every gig we do. Our drummer has a roland pad so we could program the intro section in it i was hoping I could find a processor with a nice flange effect to help fill the low end and the section after verse one before the quick bass riff

Don't forget compression either! Geddy's tone was heavily compressed on Moving Pictures! I would go with something from an earlier album or maybe a different track from MP without the synth as a lead part...Limelight maybe?
Good luck!
