Need to replace my flanger! Help!

Hello modulators.

I have an
F-13 Neo Flanger
from Alexander…

I just don’t like it. Been trying to track down an ADA Flanger but they’re rarer than dodos.

The Strymon Mobius sounds good but is quite large. The Strymon Orbit is smaller, cheaper but doesn’t sound as good…

Anyone have some superior experiences to share?

My main flange needs are Jet Flange dreaminess similar to S Gallup from The Cure’s 80’s Faith era.

Impossible to be too precise but that ADA sounds amazing. Just cannot find a cheap one. £500 on eBay is not ethical.

ADA Flanger is pretty hard to beat on everything except price, and probably worth a little extra $$ if that’s what you are after.

I see a used big box one on Guitar Center for $350 and one on reverb for $300.

The smaller ADA PBF version are harder to come by these days.

Might be worth looking into a Boss BF-2 Flanger as well. Think that was the Cure signature flange sound.

I was gonna say Boss BF-2, my fave mod pedal (let alone flanger) ever. Dunno about Simon G. but IIRC Robert S. used the BF-2 for ages.

Big flanger fan here. Some I've used:

The Ibanez mini flanger is a great take on their FL-9 pedal, currently on my board.
Mr Black Shepard's End is a great barberpole with both up and down settings and positive and negative resonance. I still have this and enjoy it.
Agreed about the Strymon Orbit. I dug it but it didn't sound as full as the others.
MXR 117R and MXR Micro Flanger. Both were great, the 117R has the classic four knobs, Micro gets you close with limited versatility.
Ibanez FL-9 also four knobs, great tones. Probably my favorite tones out of all of these, just so happens the mini version can get there and is a lot smaller and doesn't have delay time control.

I chose the DOD Fx72 after trying basically almost every flanger out there, bass centered or not. The DOD was the only one not to hollow out my sound. In fact, it adds both bass and volume when you engage it. Every other pedal dissapeared in my particular mixes but the DOD poked thru beautifully. I will say that the bypass isn't great but easily solvable by throwing it in a loop bypasser.

Simón used an Electro Harmonix Flanger live during the Faith era. I don't know what was used in the studio but i don't think the Boss BF-2 came out until a couple of years later. The only song on faith with the flanger is Holy Hour and I wouldn't call that jet flanging. You get that sound with a lot of Depth and the Regen knob at noon. You have to go past noon to get into jet flanging. There's a cool effect on Doubt that could be a flanger but I'm not sure. I haven't been able to figure that one out. Let me know if you do.
