i have a Legend Precision Bass and it sucks farts out of human colons. the pickups sound like i'm underwater, except the water is actually diarrhoea. i play punk music, what should i get to replace? (on the cheapo please)

I like neophyte pickups.. clean and clear.. then just put a volume 250k CTS Plot on it. if you want some good mods let me know I'll give you a list.. and you can do one at a time.. til you get a beast of a bass.

it's active but sounds like a vintage 60's bass pickup.. or try the Seymour Quarter pounder like roger waters bass has.. kent armstrong. that's a hot pickup

If you want cheap and decent I'd suggest GuitarFetish :

Vintage P 10.6k (standard P tone) 32 bucks :

GFS PB Pro P Bass style pickups- Sweet Alnico Vintage Tone!

Hot P 16k (more mid-range and output) 32 bucks :

GFS PB Pro PLUS- OVERWOUND Alnico P Bass style- VERY hot!

However I'll echo JimmyM and say the Geezer is one heck of a pickup. It's somewhere in-between "hot" and "vintage" and it has a nice punchy midrange boost. I think it's wound to about 13k.

If you can come up with 61 dollars you can get a custom wound pickup from Prima. They're nice, and you're not stuck with that red color in the auction I linked to. You can order white, black, etc. You can also order 1/4" magnets, or the standard size. I'd suggest asking for a wind between 12-14k. I think that will work well to get a more hard driving bass sound for punk. If you want more treble with that ask for the 1/4" magnets.

Seymour Duncan is always a good choice as well. They're actually pretty mid-range in terms of price but you're looking at 60-80 bucks. They do produce a four different P pickups though, from vintage to hot, to scooped.

The GFS is the Cheapest one. Prima look ok. if have a sound in Mind and want a custom pickup at a good rate I go to James Reed of Reed James Engineering.. call him see what he suggest.. he makes pickups here in america. it's custom so it does take a bit to get it. But totally worth it. But honestly putting custom pickup on a cheap bass is kinda goofy.

Prima is a USA shop too. I believe they're out of Maryland. The quality is basically similar to Fralin or Lollar's vintage replicas. They're just not as well known so they don't get to demand premium prices.

The stock pickup on my SX P works just great when properly set up.
You know, other than the polepieces sticking way up, I've had two SX P's along the way that I bought just because I wanted to see what a $100 bass got you, and the pickup was the best thing about them.
