I've had an invitation to join/help start a new band. If I do it I'll be playing bass. Here is their initial song list. Thoughts?

Love and Happiness * Giving it up for your love
Something * Love Train
Can't Buy me Love * Soul Shine
Ticket to Ride * Keep on Smiling
Use Me * Stuck in the Middle
I'll Be Around Whitehouse Road
Ziggy Stardust * Come and Get Your Love
Take it Easy * Summer of '69
Take Me to the River If you Want me to Stay
Peaceful Easy Feeling Take the Money and Run
Rocket Man Good Day for the Blues
White Room * Born on the Bayou
Angel from Montgomery
Ain't No Sunshine *
Brown Sugar
Jet Airliner *
Free Falling
Hello It's Me
You Wreck Me *
I Won't Back Down *
Learning to Fly
Into the Great Wide Open

Most are songs I haven't played but I like. There is one song that I dislike, one i don't understand, and three that I'm psyched about.

If you’re playing for the boomer crowd, most of those should work. If not, good luck.
Boomers range from 57 to 75 so are you doing lunch time gigs at the old people’s home?
Huh....
I don't see it.
That said, I do realize that in today's culture, me and folks like me are apparently the root of all evil (old straight, white, cis males).
Like I said... maybe I'm just out of touch.
BTW, I agree. Good song if we're talking the Stones one. A bazillion times better if it's the ZZ Top one.

Yep you are out of touch

The Rolling Stones have stopped performing “Brown Sugar” in their recent tours. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards explained that they decided to remove the song from their setlist due to concerns about its lyrics, which reference slavery. They felt that the song might not be well-received in today’s context.

If Mick and Keith aren’t performing the song, there’s your answer.
That is probably a blessing to both of them; they most likely have had enough of the song for decades now and hope some of their other 50+ year old songs are now 'Politically Incorrect' also ;)

Disclaimer: the above post contains my personal opinions in a tongue-in-cheek manner most people miss completely. It's ok if you don't share them.

Sounds like a fun set list. Main advice I have depends on how much time you have to learn them. If not much, learn the roots only until you have time to perfect each song. It`s worked for me most of my career. Also, if there`s only one offensive song or song you don`t like out of all that, you are waaaaaaay ahead of the curve. I`m sure you can suffer one or two. Good Luck!

Do they have the singers to do them justice?
Nobody wants to hear any song sung badly, but Al Green and Todd Rundgren present a pretty high bar, literally and figuratively. Use caution and listen critically. Appearing onstage with an overly ambitious singer can get you a bad rep. That also goes for (badly) harmonizing on the Eagles tunes (which is a necessity IMO).
I play in a band which does tunes like these *occasionally*.
I play in a band which limits classic rock oldies to 1/3 of the show, the rest being more current material, dance hits, and reggae.
THAT band WORKS every weekend.
Your call….

Recently checked out a bar band that was looking for bass. They played a few songs I thought were questionable (check the lyrics on "bad girlfriend") Brown sugar might not be politically correct but so what. I played Brown sugar for years and it always filled the dance floor.

If you're playing church picnics, and family street dances, I'd consider leaving out f-bombs... but 99% of the crowds don't have a clue about brown sugar. There is sooooo much worse out there no adays.

I'm mean don't get me wrong, I'm a cis white construction bro who drives a ram. Someone asked which song people might find offensive and I pointed it out. When's the last time you heard it on the radio?
