Newbie on a tight budget seeks advice/opinions

Hi all. Long time guitar player making the total plunge into the deep end. $80 Yamaha bass and matching Fender Rumble 15 for practice is working nicely. Lots of great free tab sites and YouTube lessons. Starting to get the itch to jam with friends again. On a tight budget. Looking on guitar center at a used swr workingman's 2004 head and a used gk 1x15 cabinet; $200 for both. Other head option was a Berhinger ultrabass 1800. There were a few peavey cabinets listed in my price range, but the GK was in the best condition.

Opinions on the gear mentioned? Advice for comparable gear on the cheap. I'm working man and this is only a hobby.

Agreed. If the SWR/GK components are in good shape, that's a pretty nice price.

IMO, the Acoustic combos are also decent values for the money. I see a few B100s right now on Reverb running from $165 to $200. I used to own one for a practice amp, but I did a few smaller gigs with it and it kicked pretty well.

Whenever I see budget and bass gear in the same thread I right away think older Peavey stuff. Why is because usually not only is it cheap (unless physically it's a total POS) but also that stuff was built well to last as in many say could survive almost anything from a tumble down the stairs to a small nuclear explosion...you get the point. The tone is usually decent however the SWR and GK setup you found is a good deal both for $200, I'd do that. As your budget expands in the future then you start to replace or add to your gear list however for now that setup would be a very decent rig to get you rockin'.

My main piece of advice is to avoid looking at anything new.

Personally I much prefer GK to SWR, as the EQ is more flexible and GKs have way more midrange.

I think the SWR workingman's 2004 is essential the same as the amp built into the SWR WM115. A solid head. If it sounds good with the GK cabinet and the volume meets your needs, do the deal.
