Nitro Bass Finish gummy on bottom

Pulled out today Nitro Bass stored in Protec bag standing up in closet

Bottom was gummy and finish could be rubbed off. Seems gassed somehow

Suggestions to adress?

How old is the bass, and who did the finish work?

Perhaps the case/bag is near some source of moisture or heat? Nitro is very responsive to the environment.

I would try some Vitruoso polish on it. That stuff worked excellent on my old Les Paul's nitro finish where it would get gummy where my hand would lay over the body.

Has been hot here and in glass apt building where air has been switched to heat...so likely the issue

It could be the nitro reacting with the foam in the gig bag. Nitro does not like certain foams and will "melt" on contact with it. This is why you can only use certain guitar stands with nitro basses and you'll sometimes see tape or a sock over the foam padding.

I 2nd the polish, a good carnuba wax will do.

I would probably not put it in the case again without confirming with Protec that it is nitro safe. There's always a chance that the nitro didn't cure properly but it stands to reason that the finish is mushy in that location because that is the spot that bears the most weight when it's sitting unused. I left a nitro finished bass on a synthetic blanket and the fiber pattern got "burned" into the finish in one spot.

Good feedback thanks. I used to keep it in a mono and then switched it out to the Contego very recently. Had for two years+ wo an issue

At same time been overheated where I store it....for now put back where it came from

let hang in the open and air dry for a while ... then try to polish ..

i hang all my basses ... maybe figure out a way to hang them in the closet .. ?

I bought a bass a while back mid summer and when I got it, the nitro was gummy.

Cotton t shirt cloths and naphtha smoothed out and dried it up perfectly. Use caution and ventilate well.

I'm surprised no one asked the obvious "How long was it in the closet, weeks, months, years?" ... Do you live in an apartment you don't control the heat? ... That's a guess because something softened the finish and heat does that very well.

it's the case (as stated above). I had it happen from the guitar stand. I smoothed it out as best as I could and let it "re-cure), then buffed it with some rubbing compound. Was not 100%, but you would have to look hard to find it if you didn't know where it happened.
