Well, the manufacturer is sold-out and I don't see THAT many for sale in the classifieds so I'll take that as a positive sign. I lucked upon this DE (deluxe edition?) NIB courtesy of a fellow TBer. Probably more than what I need as this comes with the top-shelf components which, in some aspects, satisfies my OCD. I suspect there may be some subtle differences in performance when A/B'd with the lower-priced SE (standard edition?) but I can neither confirm nor deny.

I really can't improve upon the manual or @scubaduba 's review. That being said, the emphasis on the re-claimed console transformer opened up a rabbit hole...the article below sheds some light on the subject and provides an explanation as to why it works:

Transformers: Magically Colorize Your Sound - Sonarworks Blog

One minor niggle and the nature of the beast: the optical comp can produce some marked blunting at higher settings (2:00 and above) which was still evident when doing a 50/50 parallel mix with the preamp...desirable for some but others may complain ("kills the dynamics"). Also, the transformer-induced density affecting the low-mids may have you re-thinking the EQ somewhere along the signal path.

Absolutely unique piece of gear. Everyone should try one.

Agree wholeheartedly. FWIW: the pic settings pic'd in the post represent the best balance I could find active vs bypassed and "side-to-side" whereas the Mix can be fully swept with no glaring bumps or drop-outs in volume. I've seen a few compressors suggested for adding girth...the Diamond comes to mind...but the Humboldt wins the gold medal in this regard.

Is this good running it into another preamp like a capo, noble, etc? Also how well does it work before hitting an oc2 style pedal?

This is absolutely fine running into another preamp. I have my Humboldt at the start of my chain, and a Broughton Studio One at the end. It’s an excellent comp for smoothing things out without squeezing them to death, and it accentuates percussiveness nicely. The single EQ control on the preamp side is very musical, plays well with other EQ downstream, and effectively adds presence or thump, without drastically changing your tone, depending on which way you twist it.

Nice. I currently use an ebs multi comp and just want something a little less focused on limiting. I have to push the multi comp pretty hard to get that juicy sustain that can really help a oc2 track better. The multi comp is pretty nice though. Just exploring newer options.

Sorry for raising a dead thread, but I ran this (almost, swapped the tuner and the Humboldt) configuration at church (IE’s) this morning, and later at a secular rehearsal (live rig) with my Soul/Funk band, to amazing results! The Humbolt is a really special box. Tone was amazing in both scenarios, with just the onboard pre in my fretless Ibby, for EQ.
J!
