What is an NRAD? New repaired amp day!

This combo was a nice uptick in what's been a rough few months for the music related endeavors. Most of my instruments and power tools were stolen not long after I sold off a majority of my amps. The instruments can still be recovered thankfully. Until then I have a single P bass and my B-15 to get me by. Don't need anything more than that, right? ;)

Well, GAS knows no limits. There was this Peavey Max combo that was replaced under warranty at the shop I do part time work for. It had an intermittent power issue: it wouldn't turn on sometimes. A couple of people had attempted to fix it so there were a few issues. The tweeter was connected improperly, the fuse was blown, and the preamp board grounding had issues. It also appeared someone had attempted to rewire the primary side of the power transformer for reasons unknown.

An hours work later I had a nice working combo for a measly $50. Truth be told, my first impressions of the amp were kind of "meh". The sound was dry and boxy. Engaging the TT boost with a low gain setting fattened things up nicely without getting the mids and highs distorted. It took a lot more EQ tweaking to dial the amp in to where I like it. That said, I happen to love the result. This little Peavey can manage a very good imitation of an Ampeg tube amp on the edge. Tripping the limiter is actually quite graceful. It is not harsh at all. I find it surprisingly reminiscent of power tube squishiness.

All in all, it's a pretty good little amp that will definitely cover my current needs. It's no old school indestructa-Peavey that'll survive falling out of a truck at 60 mph but it is respectable contender in the cheap combo category with a pretty wide tonal palette. The onbord DI makes life a little easier too.

Maybe Bobblybld can tell me if the stock speaker is a ceramic Peavey Pro 15 low frequency driver. It sure looks like one... The shop has a Peavey Pro Neo 15-8 in stock and according to the published parameters, the two speakers have the same T/S specs making for an easy swap good for almost 10 lbs. Fingers crossed! :D

I recently purchased one. First gig was outside gazebo fall festival gig. It held its own with no PA support. Same day got a call to do a pub gig and had to tote it upstairs, not fun. Still fiddlin with the eq but for those gigs I used the gain and punch to get a nice tubey growl. Nice combos for the price new or used.

I just bought one off of eBay for $67 & free shipping. ( not working or for parts) This unit was listed about 3 weeks ago as a working amp and somebody bought it.....so either the new owner had a problem and returned it , or the shop had an issue before shipping it out, and the previous buyer backed out of the sale. Either way, Ive got my soldering iron plugged in and I will try to get her up and running. I'll try to post again when it arrives.
