Hello,

I have had a Lakland 44-64 classic P bass for about a year now. The Nut width is 1.75. I'm starting to have trouble playing this instrument. My hands are on the smaller side. My question is, do I have bad technique or do I need an instrument with a shorter nut width? Thanks.

I find 1.5"(Jazz Bass) much easier to play. Also try a Hofner.

One option is to have a Luthier slim down the existing neck for you. It's not a real big deal to trim the neck narrower at the nut, keeping the heel the same, and make up a new nut for it.
^! i've done this on one of my instruments = makes all the difference in the world. the luthier also 'threw in' a brass nut, all for $80. Kieran Cronley , you might try it! good luck!

If you think the issue is with the width at the nut, i would definitely go to a music shop and try out some Jazzes. Ibanez is known for their thinner necks as well.
