I like the New Bass Day threads, but...how about an Old Bass Day? What about that bass you stopped picking up that just got a new lease on life?

I've been letting my old G&L ASAT gather dust for years while I've been playing my P-style basses, an SB-1 and now a Matador. I'm digging the blend of two different pickups with my Matador, and it got me thinking about the possibilities with my old ASAT.

I decided to toss a 4-knob John East Uni-Pre in there and see if I could rekindle some of my own interest in the bass.

First, I wanted an infinite blend of the two pickups, not just neck-50/50-bridge like stock.

Second, it would save a hole in the faceplate, letting me bring out the coil taps onto separate switches. Each pickup can now select parallel, series, or single-coil mode (AKA K-mod) independently.

There's a ton of tonal variation on tap (sorry for the pun...), and I feel like I'm just starting to understand the options. Parallel bridge needs just a little low-end thickening? Add a hair of series neck. Parallel neck need a bit more bark to stick through the mix? Add a touch of the single-coil bridge. So many possibilities...

Oh yeah, I also added the mandatory new strap to trick my brain into seeing it differently.

Anyone else ever revive an old, disfavored bass? How'd you do it?

It's a tight fit...but it does fit.
