Oiling flatwounds

Gut strings on double basses are commonly oiled as part of routine string maintenance. Oiling can help reduce the little "whiskers" that sprout from the strings that need to be trimmed off.

There is fancy bespoke string oil, but I use sweet almond oil from the grocery store as it makes my strings smell like cookies :)

For whatever it is worth: I recently started experimenting with a beeswax+oil formula on my strings. The strings are LaBella CB40 contrabass strings, and I use them on guitar scale - roughly 25" scale - acoustic basses. There aren't options for these basses beyond phosphor bronze, and for me, phosphor bronze on an acoustic bass is evil. :) Thus the experimenting. It is working well for me. Adds comfort, warms up the string a bit, without killing the string. YMMV.
