OK TB Decide my next Mike Lull

I have the J bass covered pretty well and I’m going to go a different route. I’m torn between a little more traditional or something more slight more forward/aggressive.

So I’m letting TB decide this one.

Whatever design I’m go with it will have be a 5 string ash body, ebony board, 35” and Bart Preamp.

Choice 1 Reverse P / Big Single (If I got this route I might go maple board) I dig the evenness of the reverse P, if I go down the P route.

Choice 2
the Avanti / Turbo pickup figuration (brings the neck pickup back about an inch with 2 Big Singles) the tone is like marring a J bass meets a Stingray. Very focused, aggressive, love the tone but not traditional. This would be done in the M5V format with no pickgaurd to allow the pickup routing

Choice 3 JT5 with Mike’s T-Bass Pickups (These basses do not have a pickgaurd)

This is odd poll so you can make 2 choices

I will share the responses with Mike and Crew at NAMM.
Cheers

Based on what I know about your playing, I'd go with #2 or #1. Do you have something in #2 already? If going with that one, I bet a series/parallel switch would be killer.

If going with 1, I'd suggest you request Nordstrand to place the P pickup in a rectangular shell. The red bass in my avatar picture has Nordstrand P in the neck location, but it's in a larger shell so it looks symmetrical with the bridge pickup (a Nordstrand MM). Covered polepieces too. Of course ignore this aesthetic stuff if you feel like you need to show the band leader that it's just a P. ;)

The T-Bass pickups are super cool from what I've heard, but they seem less "you" based on what I've heard...but tell me if I'm wrong!

No dude...You nailed it...

The T-Bass pickups would be a BIG diversion for me.

I have some singer / songwriter gigs coming up and was thinking something more in lower-mids and mid-mids. I'm trying to exspand the tonal palate possibly (lol) That so confident right...LOL

However the #2 is like driving a Porsche 911. Precise, Clarity, less of the mid scoop, growly and would be perfect for the fusion thing BUT there goes the phat bass.

I have a Fender Am Std P V, (alder, maple, rosewood) with Nord P and Nord Big Split in between 60's and 70's position. (It is not a reverse P.) It is possible to balance the output levels for the pickups. The pickups blend well. I found that the BS was too harsh with Circle K strings when solo'd. I currently have TI jazz flats. The strong mids from these strings work very well with this combination. So I would recommend the BS in the 60's position if you plan on going with rw's and want to keep a trad sound.

Also, you might want to look over Ed Friendland's comments about P+J pickups. He is not a fan of that configuration. He does prefer the combo with a reverse P IIRC.

Interesting...I figured if I was going to go "P" -ish I was going to do the reverse. I would be going Nordstrand all the way with that as far as pickups go.

The Nord P is the least P sounding precision bass pickup of the one's I have tried, but it is a great sounding pickup. For really trad P in a 5 string P+J setup, I would consider the Aguilars. I have not tried them personally, but the video demos sound great IMO.

the T pickups are really a "must try to see if its you" kinda thing. I tried to like, but ended up not so much.
Good Point G
I will be putting them through the paces @ NAMM to really get a good understanding.

Now if you really want to expand your tone palette within your choice of pup configurations here.
Put EMG Geezer reverse P and J in it and thank me later.
I need you to play my Geezer equipped Lull P.
I don't think that comes in 5 (I could be wrong not a %100)

I have thought about a different take on the Reverse P/J thing for a while. Instead of reversing the pickup in place (E&A half is closer to the bridge/D&G half is closer to the neck) like most do, keep the B,E,A coil in the traditional P-bass spot and move the D&G coil in front of it.

I'm also a fan of the T-bass pickups. Another option could be a JT5 with the avanti/turbo pickup spacing. The neck pickup in the traditional spot may be too tubby or unfocused for your style, but slamming it back against the bridge pickup may help tighten things up. I would expect it to be fat, but focused.

I am just curious, I have not heard the "avanti/turbo" position before. Where does the term come from? Is it a very specific location? If you know, how does it compare to the Sadowsky modern?

Thanks for the info as I have been thinking about a Lull TC5 to go with my M5V I am really curious about this idea.
