Last year I built what could be a birth year (1958) P bass for me using all Fender/CTS parts; 2 tone sunburst body, gold anodized pickguard, thumb rest, etc. Not exactly 1958 parts were a Fender roasted maple neck and Fender Pure Vintage '63 pickup. Came out really well - great feel and sound! And yes, flats.

Here's the wiring diagram I worked from.

The only differences were I soldered a ground wire between the pot cases and connected one capacitor wire to case of Tone pot, instead of top connector of Volume. Electrically, still the same.

I just saw another couple of wiring diagrams and the wire connection between V & T pots is different. Tone connection is opposite! The wire coming from the bottom lug of Volume is connected to the center lug of the Tone pot and the capacitor is connected to the bottom lug of the Tone pot instead. WTH!?!

Which way is correct? Would my bass sound different with that config? What's going on here?

There is no right or wrong, the two methods you've described are equivalent from an electrical perspective. In both cases, the pot is acting as a variable resistor in series with the capacitor, between the pickup hot and ground.
