Opinions about Tech 21 Flyrig bass

Hi everyone, for about three years I have not used effects on the bass anymore, a bit out of laziness a bit because I was tired of being anxious that something could go wrong during concerts, so I started playing totally flat or better to say "plug and play". But now I need to go back to using some effects, the main ones like chorus, compressor and overdirve, and evaluating various multi-effects pedals, my choice fell on the tech 21 fly rig bass, which seems perfect for my needs. Can anyone who owns flyrig give me opinions? Is this a good buy for someone who plays a lot of live and only needs the main effects? Most importantly: is the flyrig compressor good and does it guarantee an increase in sustain to the bass?

I had the original version and enjoyed it quite a bit. I wasn't very impressed with the compressor section. To me it wasn't as versatile as I would have liked it and could get noisy with the sansamp section engaged. Just my experience. I basically just used it for the sansamp, chorus and envelope filter. It's a good choice but you should definitely try it first before you buy to be sure it's what you want.

I have a Bass Fly rig V1

It's very handy and much smaller than one might think.

Regarding the compressor - it is a two knob compressor, and has it's limitations, but at higher levels, it absolutely increases sustain. In fact it increases it a little too much for my taste, and can lead to some pumping or swelling effects with the sustain.

I have the V1. I like everything on it except the Octafilter. The Octafilter sounds great when used for a synth-bass sound, but I don’t need that sound and wish it were better at being a basic fuzz or envelope follower.

That said, I would get it if you want a SansAmp with some basic effects. I wouldn’t get it for use as a multi-effect.

Are you saying that the V2 is worse than V1 in this respect?

Unless they refined the v2 comp platform, I'll speculate and say "yes". The v1 is a bit heavy-handed when turned up beyond 10:00 IMO / IME. Adding "Tone" provides some level of compensation. OTOH, the v2 offers the BDDI character voicing but, from what I've gleaned, folks aren't going nuts about it.

These kind of multi effects are always a compromise.
Very generic, basic, effects of passable quality, nothing more.

I would say tone wise you would be better off buying some great stand alone budget (that is if you need to keep within the same kind of budget) pedals for each effect you need, or at least that is what I would recommend, were it not for your concerns about reliability.

...which is why it's a "fly rig" and nothing else. There is no way I'd use it as the keystone in any full-blown pedal board config. For that fact, if faced with an amp-less / IEM / semi-pro project, I'd be looking more closely at one of the better multi-FX. I've gotten too old and lazy to haul around much else.
