Opinions on a new build

Ok so here's the situation. I have a friend who is building guitars and he asked if I would like one built. He's jonesing to build a J. Good and easy so far. But I want to go fretless (as I've never owned one) and want to know should I buy something like an SX (due to not being too terribly built) and strip it down and work from that or buy a kit bass and cross my fingers? I like the idea of getting an SX and stripping it down, but idk how much work/hassle that would be. Mainly I'd be furnishing pieces and parts to offset cost (looking at bridges and electronics and having to put myself in a perspective of cost is tough on me right now lol). Trying to keep most of my cost in paying him to do a really nice finish on the bass. Also thinking of maybe going P/J. We're in the really early stages of doing this.

I'm thinking
Passive P/J
Purple finish (haven't nailed it down to specifics on how I want this)
White PG with Maple FB, Black PG with Rosewood FB
Thinking about a Quarter Pound set of Pickups VVT or VFT
Babicz bridge (undecided what model and if really needed)
Hipshot Ultralight tuners (if other's are just trash)

I have a couple of different ideas as well

1. Defret a fretted and place some luminlay into the fret slots and use a clear epoxy on the top
2. Idk if it is possible, but maybe do a really nice Purple tinted (or opaque) epoxy, as the bass will be purple as well (it's my color of choice), which I think would aim my PG color to something unknown at this point lol
3. A variation on option 1 and instead of doing an epoxy on the entire FB, just do a little clear over the Luminlay strips.

If anyone else has any ideas or thoughts feel free to chime in

If you want to alter/adapt an already existing bass, look for a used Squier J that has a good (not warped) neck and is cheap, maybe even beat-up a bit. I bought a decent 2000 (MII) Squier Standard on craigslist for $75 for example. You could rout for a P pu and cut a new pg for it. A Squier is a decent platform for modding.(solid wood-not plywood) Keep most if not all of the original (cheap but functional) parts and spend money on the finish or pu's. I wouldn't spend big money on other parts unless I knew the bass was going to be worth it when you're done. (plays/sounds good) Whatever, do a 'before and after' thread and have fun!

South, check out ReRanch.com... I chose a nitro-cellulose primer, paint, and lacquer in Copper Tone Metallic for my Saga MB- 10 kit (EBMM Stingray Classic)... pretty sure they have something in purple, or similar shade... Good luck with your build, also!
