I have been listening to a lot of Ovidiu lately and he gets such a nice crunch to his tone. Do any of you know what brand they were?

Double Bass Ovidiu Badila Strings?

For the cover I would have thought Dominants, but there are other strings (like the small manufacturer German strings on my first bass) that have that color at the tailpiece end.

The strings on the video have a ring at the tailpiece, so they're not Dominants or Flexocors.
Could be Corellis, Original FlatChromes, Helicores, to name a few...

I seriously doubt LaBella.
It's not great quality, but the silks in the video look different to me than the silks in the still photo. From what little I can tell from the video, they look like Pirastro tailpiece silks to me, but I can't really tell which ones.
Here's a better still photo and the silks appear all black. Corelli would make sense. Maybe one of old Innovation Compass sets?

Any of the tungsten Corelli's could look like this as well.

LaBella had sets with that kind of dark purple silk.
The 7780 set comes to mind, but they've been discontinued as far as I know.
Pirastro's Original Flexocor's purple is much brighter than what I see on the picture.

I am going strictly on uninformed opinion here, but would a famed Orchestra soloist be using LaBella strings? I just don't recall LaBella making a set that our serious orchestral brothers and sisters talk about.
...but I could be wrong.
The 7780 set was specially intented for soloists.
Miroslav Vitous has been playing a long time on LaBella strings and with a lot of arco playing too.
He may still use them, I don't know, and there's very little to read about his gear on his website. (a polite way to says there's nothing about that)

The photo that I posted above looks black to me, but I can see a little purple tinge, can't tell if it's real or the light.
Bottom line...I don't know what strings he's using, I just hate losing this game.
