When buying patch cables, you can buy a pack of 3 pre-made ones for about £5-£10

But if you buy a kit to make them yourself, for a pack of 6 your looking at spending £50-£70.

The SIS plugs are priced at around £6 each.

Why is it so much more expensive to make them yourself?

I get they're made in bulk but it seems like a ridiculous difference in pricing.

It's a shame because patch cables pre-made don't fit my needs for ym pedal board.

You can buy parts for making your own far cheaper than those kits. Just get some cable and some ends and go for it. Still won't be anywhere near as cheap as the bulk packs though.

This.

However, many of the kits come with really nice cable and ends. Much nicer than the packs of cables you find at the guitar store for a few bucks. Whether or not you require "nicer" is up to you.

Buy some Mogami W2524 wire & a bunch of those pancake connectors:

Pre-made patch cables are very simple inside - 2 leads and a couple blobs of solder. Kits require machined screws, locking hardware, cables prepped for solderless installation and bigger packaging.

I would make my own, but the pancake connectors are too big around for some of my pedals where the jacks are crowded together. (I'm looking at you Iron Ether) and the common 90deg plug barrels are too long to fit around nearby power jacks.

These HOSA molded patch cables do fine for my needs.
