I just posted a thread about a new Mesa cabinet I got. It sounds great with my Trace Elliot 1210 combo driving it. So, I want to remove the amp part of the combo and put it in a 2 space rack.

I have removed the amp from the chassis before to inspect it for damage, so I know how to get it out. But I don't recall it having ears or any accommodation for mounting in a rack.

Has anyone here specifically done this with this exact amp? Was it difficult? Unexpected issues?

Strangely, the Gator website returns no results when trying to find a rack solution. With the amp section removed from the enclosure, it measures 22.5" wide, 3.75" tall and 13" deep. The width seems non-standard as most of the racks I see are designed for items 19" wide.

Very easy you build or have someone build you a custom rack. I'm sure you can get any local cabinet shop to build you one cheap. So you makle a wood box that the amp slides into deep enough so the face is behind the outside edge about an inch. Put a piece of plywood on either side in the front that allows you to run some nice wood screws into to hold the amp in. I had a guy build me one out of cherry wood one time and it was gorgeous. It could also be covered in something that closely matches your speaker cab.

Well, that is certainly one option. I was hoping to get a molded plastic case.

Yeah, that amp is extra wide to accommodate the width of 2 10s below it. I have just the head out of a combo that was damaged in shipping (to someone else and then the head was resold at a discount to me). I had the same realization as you are having. Sadly it got damaged once I had it and hasn't bee fixed yet. BUT, I did buy an AH 600-12, which is the EXACT same amp, just in a head configuration. If you wanted to use it aside from the combo speakers, you should just think about getting one of those. As far as I can discern, there were 2 generations of these, with 2 style preamps (7 band and 12 band) and 2 overall power levels. But the power levels were each increased a bit for the 2nd generation. So 500 and 1000w for the 1st (made in the UK) and 600 and 1200w for the 2nd (made in the US). The 12 band heads have the more comprehensive EQ, valve drive, dual band compression, and fancier effects loop options. But they both sound great (I also have an AH 500-7 which I bought before I got my hands on the 600-12).

But yeah, if you're set on using your existing amp like that, you'll have to get a custom head shell made.

Luckily, there is a custom case company called A&S/Encore that is located only a few miles from me, so I have contacted them. We'll see...

Is this the Encore case company in N Hollywood? Back in the day I had them build me 2 cases for a pair of SWR Goliath III cabs. Came out great and were priced well. All they should need are the measurements and they should be able to make it happen. I had the cabs when I stopped in to get them on my way to a show.....they helped me get them in the cases and load them back in my truck! Hope it works out for you.

Those are the guys. Waiting to hear back.

Hopefully less expensive, easier and faster to get a case built as opposed to buying a second amp and using a standard case.

Yeah, but you wouldn't have a combo cabinet with no head taking up space and presumably not ever getting used. And if you want a legit case, you will really have to take the amp in, because otherwise they will have no idea where to drill holes to attach everything. You'll also take a hit on resale most likely, if you sell the head and combo separately (probably at the very least you would eat the cost of the case).

I've already assumed I'd be dismantling the cab to sell the drivers since I suspect there would be little purchasing interest in it as-is.
Luckily, the custom case company I have contacted is located less than 10 miles from me, so taking it in isn't a problem.
