Peavey Headliner overheating!?

I recently purched a Peavey Headliner 1000 watt because my Ampeg PF-800 kept cutting out (common issue with the Portaflex models) and I thought all my problems would be solved but alas, they are not. I'm currently running my Ibanez SR655 through a Darkglass AOU preamp, Aguilar TLC Compressor, and a cheap noise gate (works great) into the Peavey Headliner with an Acoustic 8x10 cab. I can't get the volume I need to be audible live without having the head cut out and am looking for any advice. Do I rearrange my pedal chain? Is my cab unable to handle all that power? Do I add another speaker? I'm at a loss at this point. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

First, you need to verify that your cabinet is in fact 4 ohm minimum and nobody tried to repair (or modify) it and ended up with something other than what you THINK it is. This is a common issue that we run into when troubleshooting this kind of problem.

Second, it's possible that there is an intermittent problem with something other than your amp that is causing the problem. This too is a common problem. Eliminate EVERYTHING except a known good bass and instrument and speaker cable. (Your current bass and cable is not a known good combination because it's common with both of your problems.

Third, it's almost 100% guaranteed that it's not your amp overheating. Barking up that tree is going to get you another unsuccessful solution (though it's good for those selling amps)

Yeah sounds like your cab has some issues. Two amps have now shut down trying to drive it (plus Portaflex 800's do not have an 'issue' with shutting down...not sure where you heard that). May have a blown speaker or like the aged one says, it's a lower impedance than you think. If that's the case, grab a 2 ohm stable amp like a Mesa Subway D800.

I have a new Peavey Headliner 1000 watt amp that does the same thing through a new Headliner 410 cabinet and thought the same thing about getting hot. After maybe 15 minutes of playing at a modest volume it turns off for a couple minutes then turns back on. I doubt seriously it is my bass or cable which have never had any problems through my old setup. It was suggested to me to put a fan on the back of my rack as the amp is not fan cooled. Hopefully that solves the problem.
