Double Bass Pittsburgh Bass Symposium

The Carnegie Mellon University School of Music is proud to present the Pittsburgh Double Bass Symposium on March 19, 2016. This event is free and open to the public. The day will be filled with performances, presentations and master classes by artists such as Alex Hanna, Jeffrey Turner, Jeffrey Mangone, Joel Reist and Kurt Muroki. Luthiers and vendors will have exhibits for you to visit throughout the day. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's double bass section, along with Carnegie Mellon faculty members Micah Howard and
Peter Guild, will perform in recital, and the featured artist of the day will be world-renowned double bass soloist DaXun Zhang, also known for his work with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble. Doors open at 8 am in Alumni Concert Hall and Kresge Theater in the College of Fine Arts Building. The Symposium will include master classes, recitals, networking opportunities, and chances to chat with exhibitors.

Carnegie Mellon University School of Music is proud to present the Pittsburgh Double Bass Symposium on March 16, 2019. Presenters include Max Dimoff, principal bass of the Cleveland Orchestra; Rex Surany, principal bass of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra; Cory Palmer, Carnegie Mellon graduate and principal bass of the Rochester Philharmonic; Jason Heath host of Contrabass Conversations; Jeff Mangone, principal bass of Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra; Jeffrey Turner and members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra double bass section, Carnegie Mellon University double bass faculty, Micah Howard and Peter Guild, and other special guests.

The Symposium will include master classes, recitals, networking opportunities, and chances to visit with exhibitors, including Shank’s Strings, Guarneri House, Heartland String Bass Shop, Upton Bass, and Sound Spike Endpins.

All performances and classes will be in Kresge Theatre and exhibitors will be in Alumni Concert Hall of the College of Fine Arts Building.

This year’s symposium features classes with Scott Pingel, Principal Bass of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra; Max Dimoff, principal bass of the Cleveland Orchestra; Nina DeCesare, the newest member of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Bass Section. Lauren Pierce, a YouTube sensation and educator, will be the featured recitalist. Jason Heath of Contrabass Conversations will be conducting interviews with presenters and sponsors throughout the day. Jeff Mangone, principal bass of the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra, will present. Jeff Turner, Double Bass Professor, Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University, the Pittsburgh Symphony Double Bass Section, and Carnegie Mellon University double bass faculty, Micah Howard and Peter Guildwill perform together in recital.
